DirtyDesk is a system extension which removes the commands "Clean Up Desktop" and "Clean Up All" from the Special menu in the Finder (I haven't tried System 6, but if the commands exist, they no longer work :).
Why would anyone ever want to run an extension called DirtyDesk?
Have you ever been burned by the Finder "cleaning up" your nicely arranged desktop only to discover that Undo won't put everything back where you had it? I have, once too often.
What does DirtyDesk do?
Not much really. It keeps you from seriously screwing up your desktop by making sure the commands to "Clean Up Desktop" and "Clean Up All" are never made available. On a more technical level, it installs a small patch in the Finder which checks to see if the first item in the Special menu contains either "Clean Up Desktop" or "Clean Up All". If so, it disables the item before allowing the system to continue through the system call to MenuSelect. When MenuSelect is through, it restores the menu to it's previous state.
DirtyDesk has been tested for a ridiculously short period of time on a IIci, Classic and LC with a large number of system extensions installed under system 7.0 and 7.1. No problems have been found.
DirtyDesk is an extension thrown together in about 2 hours. Because people I work with wanted it, I decided I should release it as Freeware. If you want it, you can have it, you can't pay for it. If someone has charged you for it, I'd like to know about it. If you don't like it or need it, that's fine, don't run it.
Palace Productions and David D. Ely take absolutely no responsibility for your data (or the lack thereof). If you lose something because of running this extension, oh well. If that bothers you, C'est La Vie (see the suggestion above).
